No-1 ranked Sedona finishes 2000 season undefeated

The number-1 ranked 2A Sedona Red Rock golf team completed an unblemished 33-0 dual meet season record with a 213-241 victory over Northwest Christian in a match played April 28 at the Sedona Golf Resort.

Leading the way for the Scorpions were junior Jeff Thieman at one-over-par 38 and freshman Sean Ernes at 39. Junior Mike Sells shot 43, freshman Jimmy Bicking 45 and junior Tamara Bill 48 to round out the scoring for the Purple Varsity.

“The scores were down somewhat due to heavy gusting winds,” said coach David Bill.

The Gray Varsity closed out their season by beating Northwest 233-241 .

The Gray season record against other varsities ended at 17-3.

Sophomore Ryan Miller led the Gray scoring with a 43. Sophomore Kyle French shot 45, sophomore David Guard 45, freshman Billy Fitz 49 and sophomore Brett Snider 51.

“Ryan and Kyle heave improved markedly over the last part of the season,” added coach Craig Williamson.

April 26, Sedona won a four-way match at Scottsdale Country Club with a near school record performance of 182. Scottsdale Christian placed second at 215. Northwest Christian was third at 218 and Florence fourth at 255. Jake Grodzinsky led the Scorpions with a record-tying one-under per 34, Mike Sells finished at even par 35, Jeff Thieman 36, Jimmy Sicking 38 and Austin Wesnitzer 39. Only one player on the other three teams was able to break 40.

The Sedona Purple (199) and Gray (218) teams both sank Winslow (241) in a home meet on April 25 at Oak creek Country Club. Jake Grodzinsky shot 37, Jeff Thieman 38 and Sean Ernes 38 to head Up the Scorpion’s double victory. Mike Sells had a 42 and Brett Snider a 44 for the Purple. The Gray scores were Austin Wesnitzer 42. Ryan Miller 43, Silty Fitz 44, David Guard 44 and Kyle French 46.

“Prior to this season, we’ve only had two players who ever broke 80 as an average over the course of the whole year, said Coach Dennis Mobley. “ Hiro Iwanaga averaged 78.0 in 1998 and Kyle Williamson averaged 78.3 in 1999.

“All five starters accomplished that feat this spring. Jake Grodzinsky averaged 753, Seen Ernes 76.5, Jeff Thieman 77.4, Jimmy Sicking 78.5 and Mike Sells 78.8.

“Our beat team average for nine-hole matches before was a 213.9. This year we lowered that team record to 193.4,”

The North/Canyon Regionals will be held Friday at Antelope Hills Golf Course in Prescott. The 1A-2A State Golf Tournament will be May 11-12 at Johnson Ranch Resort.
