Winter sports season now in full swing

This week is to the winter high school sports season what the day after Thanksgiving is to the Christmas shopping period — the big kick off.

Games and tournaments will abound for teams from Camp Verde, Mingus Union and Sedona Red Rock. Some travel will be involved to see most of the action, but local schools will be hosting a few events.

So before you head out to continue Christmas shopping, take a look at what’s in store in the gyms, on the mats and at the soccer field over the next week:

Basketball

o Camp Verde’s boys basketball team played at home Tuesday night against 2A Mayer (after press time) and will travel to Winslow for three days of tournament action, beginning Thursday.

The Cowboys will open the 14-team event against Payson at 2:30 p.m. A win gives them a chance to face 3A champion Tuba City later Thursday evening. Other notable teams in the event include 5A Camelback, 4A Flagstaff and Coconino, and 3A schools like Show Low and Chino Valley.

o The Camp Verde girls will also play four days this week, visiting yesterday’s date at Mayer. The Cowboys will play in a tournament at Williams High School on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Both Cowboy squads entered this week 1-0 after wins over Williams in last Monday’s season opener.

o Mingus Union’s boys basketball team spent four days last week in Mesa at the Mountain View High School Thanksgiving Roundball Classic. The Marauders’ schedule will be nearly as busy this week, with three games on deck.

Mingus hosted Moon Valley on Tuesday, will visit Tempe tonight and will entertain Bradshaw Mountain on Friday.

o The Lady Marauders will follow a similar path, playing at Moon Valley on Tuesday and hosting Tempe on Wednesday. Mingus will then spend two days in the Globe High School tournament Friday and Saturday.

Pete Fredlake’s squad is slated to play four games in the event.

o Red Rock’s boys hoops squad played in a Tucson tournament this past week and will host three games this week. Wickenburg visited Tuesday night, followed by Northland Prep on Thursday and Phoenix Christian on Saturday.

o The Lady Scorpions traveled to Chino Valley on Monday and will play today, Thursday and Friday in River Valley High School’s hoops tournament.

Soccer

o Unlike Camp Verde and Red Rock high schools, which play in the fall, the Mingus Union boys and girls soccer teams must endure the cold of winter.

The Marauder girls will host Flagstaff in a Wednesday afternoon scrimmage and will open the season Friday and Saturday at the Kingman Invitational. The Mingus boys don’t start until Dec. 6 with a home game against Bradshaw Mountain.

o The Mingus JV squad, a mix of boys and girls, will play at Centennial on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Wrestling

o Camp Verde’s wrestling squad will open the season today at Mogollon and then will return home Friday and Saturday for its annual Verde Duals tournament.

Sixteen teams are expected this season, ranging from 5A schools down to 1A — Chino Valley, Jo City, Fountain Hills, Wickenburg, River Valley, Mingus Union, Parker, Tuba City, Duncan, Payson, Seton Catholic, Dysart, San Manuel, Trevor Browne and Mogollon.

o Mingus Union’s varsity wrestlers will join the field in Camp Verde this coming weekend. The JV squad will join a multi-meet at Sinagua High on Saturday.
