A Mexican national has been arrested on allegations of burglary and sexual assault after allegedly breaking into an apartment and raping a 19-year-old woman.
Efron Moralez-Lopez, 22, San Luis, Mexico, was arrested Wednesday by Cottonwood police. The arrest was the result of a report by the woman that Lopez had entered her apartment through an unlocked window and attacked her while she slept on the couch.
According to the woman, the assault lasted about 10 minutes. Lopez then allegedly smoked a cigarette and thanked the woman before leaving through the front door and riding off on a bicycle.
The woman reportedly knew Lopez because her boyfriend allegedly buys drugs from him, a police report said. The boyfriend allegedly obtained drugs from Lopez earlier that day but didn't pay for them, the woman said. She told police she may have been raped in retaliation for the drug deal.
According to police, the boyfriend had been arrested earlier that day for assault per domestic violence against the woman. After being released from jail, the boyfriend spotted Lopez near Cottonwood Lanes bowling alley and called police.
Lopez was booked into the Yavapai County Jail in Camp Verde for sexual assault and burglary, police said. He is being held on $250,000 bond.
A story in the Verde Independent Wednesday stated that Willam Storms, 50, Cottonwood was arrested and cited and released for DUI after crashing his motorcycle March 10. Storms was not arrested. According to the police report, Storms will be cited for DUI and driving without proof of insurance once results from a blood alcohol content test are returned from the lab.
