Cottonwood standoff ends in arrest
The Cottonwood Police Department reported the arrest of Jason Calvin Smith, on Aug. 16, at about 2 p.m. in the 1000 block of Trails End Drive in Cottonwood.
According to the police report, Cottonwood police officers, Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers, Yavapai County Special Weapons And Tactics deputies, Yavapai County Sheriff's Deputies, Coconino Forest Ranger Law Enforcement and a DPS helicopter unit were dispatched to assist in the pursuit of a vehicle reported stolen.
The vehicle allegedly traveled at speeds exceeding 90 mph on Arizona 89A near Page Springs Road on a flat tire. The report states that officers pursued the gold-colored Toyota pickup truck driven by Smith, who had allegedly stolen the truck from an undisclosed area in Flagstaff.
Police reported that Smith led officers down Trails End Drive and then along a private drive where, Smith reportedly barricaded himself in a barn on a private residence. Smith allegedly held police at bay for about three hours. According to the report, he pointed a weapon at them while talking on a telephone.
According to the police report, Smith finally relented to officer's demands to comply and was arrested. Subsequent to the arrest, officers searching the vehicle reported finding a firearm, drug paraphernalia, burglary tools, and a large amount of 22-caliber ammunition. The report states that the truck Smith was driving was reported stolen by Flagstaff Police Department on July 26.
Smith faces five counts of aggravated assault, alleged felony theft (controlling property of another, alleged first degree burglary, alleged possession of burglary tools), possession of drug paraphernalia, weapons misconduct (prohibited possessor), weapons misconduct (prohibited weapon), weapons misconduct (possessing weapon during drug offense).
According to the police, Smith was transported to Yavapai County Detention Center in Camp Verde.
