A SEARCH of two Verde Valley men during a traffic stop uncovered this explosive device.

The Sheriff's Office reported that deputies, while conducting a routine traffic stop, discovered the explosive device. The July 7 search also uncovered illegal drugs.

YCSO Deputy Lt. James Jarrell said that deputies arrested Adam Christopher Prosser, 19, of Cottonwood, and Eric Robert Severson, 23, of Clarkdale, during a traffic stop at an undisclosed location on Arizona 260 in Cottonwood.

Jarrell said that deputies suspected the driver, Prosser, to be operating the vehicle under the influence and stopped him about 4:50 a.m. Jarrell said that subsequent to the traffic stop, deputies reported they discovered weapons and useable quantities of marijuana and methamphetamine.

"Their intent has not yet been determined," Jarrell said. "The case is still under investigation and the information is not yet available."

During their search of the vehicle, deputies allegedly discovered a shotgun with an illegal barrel length of less than 18 inches and a homemade explosive device that was allegedly constructed with armor-piercing ammunition as projectiles.

Deputies report that the Arizona Department of Public Safety Bomb Squad was contacted and rendered the device inert. Jarrell said that the device, the weapon and the drugs are being held as evidence.

Both Prosser and Severson were arrested and booked into the Yavapai County Detention Center in Camp Verde and face charges of possession of dangerous drugs, possession of a prohibited weapon during commission of a drug offense and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Jarrell said that one of the suspects was an alleged prohibited possessor of a weapon.

"It isn't clear yet which one of the suspects was already convicted of a felony," he said. "A prohibited possessor is a convicted felon whose civil rights had not been restored by a judge."
