Wal-Mart evacuation was false alarm

Wal-Mart was evacuated at approximately 10 a.m. when the stores alarm system was triggered by what fire officials call a water surge on Aug. 18.

The evacuation lasted about an hour while fire crews investigated, but determined it to be a false alarm. There were no reports on injuries, or damage.

According to Cottonwood Fire Department officials, the department was conducting testing at the construction site of the new Wal-Mart Super Center earlier in the day.

Officials report that it is suspected that it may have caused a surge in the water system that activated the systems alarm in the Wal-Mart store, located at 1100 Arizona 260 in Cottonwood.

Fire officials report that the fire suppression system indicated water flow, which activated the alarm, but crews found nothing indicating an emergency and the scene was secured shortly after their arrival.

Cottonwood man arrested after parent files complaint

Yavapai County Sheriff's Office reported that deputies made an arrest after a parent allegedly discovered her 12-year-old son in possession of methamphetamine.

According to a police report, deputies arrested John Gerard Reed, 23, of Cottonwood on Aug. 17, at approximately 7 p.m.

Deputies report that the arrest was made subsequent to a search at Reed's residence located at the Canyon Trail Apartment complex.

The report states that Reed's brother allegedly gave consent for the search, which allegedly yielded prescription drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Deputies report that YCSO Special Crimes Unit was informed of the alleged drug sales at that residence when a concerned citizen discovered her son was in possession of methamphetamine and alleges that she went to the apartment and witnessed drug use.

The report states that Reed was arrested without incident and a search of his person allegedly yielded 11 grams of marijuana hidden in his shoe.

Reed was booked into the Yavapai County Detention Facility in Camp Verde and faces charges of alleged possession of marijuana and alleged possession of paraphernalia, as well as alleged possession of prescription medication for sale.
