A great place to enjoy this delectable vegetable this weekend, freshly roasted and slathered in butter, is downtown Camp Verde. The Parks and Recreation Department is once again hosting its popular Cornfest tonight and again tomorrow evening.
Hauser & Hauser Farms, a longtime agricultural family, provides exceptionally good corn for the town's traditional event held every July, now marking its 12th year. You’ll find Hauser family members preparing and roasting the sweet stuff served outdoors picnic-style. There's a small charge, but you won't taste anything better, anywhere.
Generally, there is a large truckload of corn, so you can take a dozen or so ears home at a very reasonable rate too. Other types of corn foods, like kettle corn, can usually be found, plus lots of hot dogs and bratwurst.
Besides oodles of corn, there are fun contests, each with an appropriate corn name. There's the "corniest joke" contest, the "corn shucking" contest, and the "corn-eating" contest. And please don't miss an all-time favorite, the hilarious hog-calling contest designed only for those brave enough to try out their "soooooey" vocal skills.
Be sure to stop by to say hello to this year's honorary Cornfest King and Queen, always two special town elders. And the evening would not be complete without some lively dancing at the nighttime "Corn Ball." Events Coordinator Candy Hammond said a country band will play fun instruments like washtubs on Friday evening, and it's Flagstaff’s talented Burnett Family Band performing Saturday night.
Arts-and-craft vendors are always part of the scene, plus expect plenty of fun things for kids to do, like train rides, the Jolly Jump, a hay ride, and much, much more. A USA Boxing tournament is new this year inside the Community Center gym, and be sure to stop by Room 207 for this year's Camp Verde Kiwanis Club's Red Tag Sale, from 5 to 9 p.m.
It's free admission for the Cornfest held July 16-17, 5-11 p.m., downtown Camp Verde, gazebo area. Parking is available near Fort Verde.
