Police: Roadside death appears to be homicide

Cottonwood Police Department is investigating a possible homicide that was discovered on Monday afternoon.

According to police report, a Cottonwood police officer was on patrol in the area of Arizona 260 approximately half-a-mile east of Ogden Ranch Road when he observed a vehicle parked of the west side of the highway in a suspicious location June 28 around noon.

The report states that upon investigating, the officer discovered an unidentified male subject that was deceased in the vehicle.

"The victim is a male in his 20s and appears to have suffered either trauma to the head or the back," Cottonwood Police Sgt. Jody Fanning said. "We are not positive of the victim's identification or the actual cause of his death."

Cottonwood police report that the vehicle, described as a compact, late-model Geo, blue-green in color, appeared to be pulled off of the road and parked in the area but had no apparent reason to be there.

"The vehicle appeared to be intentionally parked so we believe it wasn't mechanical failure," Fanning said. "And we found no weapons in the vicinity. That leads us to believe it is a homicide."

The first officer on the scene summoned supervisors and investigators to respond, and the area was secured for investigation.

According to police, Yavapai County Attorney investigators and Department of Public Safety Crime Scene Unit were dispatched for assistance and are working with officers and detectives.

Police reported that investigators still have not determined the exact time and the actual cause of death, and the identification of the victim has not been released.

"We found nothing that indicated the victim's wounds were self-inflicted and are investigating this a homicide," Fanning added. "He suffered some sort of trauma, but it's too early to tell."
