Verde Valley man injured in cycle wreck

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office reported that a 19-year-old Cottonwood area man was injured in a collision that occurred in Verde Village on Sept. 7 at approximately 5 p.m.

According to a police report, deputies and emergency medical personnel responded to Del Rio and Manzanita Trail in Verde Village to a report of a vehicle vs. a motorcycle wreck.

Deputies report that Joshua Shane Matthews suffered a broken leg and abrasions when, according to deputies, he failed to stop at a stop sign at Manzanita Trail.

The report states that Philip D. Kestell, 40, of Cottonwood, was driving a Dodge Caravan westbound on Del Rio when the Go-Ped driven by Matthews entered the road in front of Kestell, who was reportedly unable to avoid a collision and was involved in the wreck with Matthews.

The report states further that witnesses to the accident confirmed Kestell’s explanation of the incident.

YCSO reports that Kestell escaped injury, but Matthews was not wearing a helmet and that driver impairment was not a factor, but speed and driver inattention were factors in the wreck.

Deputies report that Verde Valley Fire District responded and treated Matthews who was then transported via helicopter ambulance to St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix were he reportedly was listed in stable condition.
