Girls soccer wins first contest of the season
The Camp Verde girls soccer team won their first contest of the season, beating Round Valley 6-1 on Saturday August 27.
Forging a dominating presence in the midfield were Rochelle Williams and Ashley Petefish. Williams played aggressively on offense and Petefish determinedly on defense.
Sophomore Kristy Williams and Rochelle Williams netted two goals apiece. Tanya McCullough, 'the freshman surprise' according to coach Mary Taylor, scored one for the team as well as Maggie Monroe, a sophomore.
The highlight of the game, according to coach Taylor, was when Monroe was on a break away from the outside mid-field, one on one against the Round Valley defender, and placed the ball in the corner of the net.
Nicole Betz stepped in to lead the defense at sweeper in the absence of the usual starter, Kimmy Reddell. Reddell was out of town for this game.
Betz was nearly unstoppable says coach Taylor and the defense was only scored on once. Betz was greatly supported by two seniors: Kellie Miller and Heather Travis. Travis is an all-star keeper who blocked every shot Round Valley took, except for one.
The Cowboys next game is today at home versus Chino Valley at 3 p.m.
