Woman killed in Beaverhead Flats crash
Another fatal traffic accident occurred at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday. A Las Vegas woman, several months pregnant, was killed in a near head-on collision. A second driver was airlifted to Flagstaff Medical Center with severe trauma.
Emergency crews say there were no skid marks to show that the vehicles attempted to stop.
Officials suspect that the surviving driver, a Verde Valley man, may have been impaired with alcohol or drugs. His blood was taken for analysis. The male driver's vehicle drove left of the centerline, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The dead woman was driving a small four-door sedan. The male driver was in a Toyota SUV and also needed to be extracted. It took two hours to remove the victims from the wreckage.
Both vehicles suffered heavy damage. The vehicles were crumpled together, which emergency crews say tends to indicate high speed was involved.
The accident occurred one and a half miles from the Cornville Road intersection on the county road. The sheriff's deputies entirely closed the limited-access road pending completion of their investigation. The road was re-opened at 9:30 Thursday morning.
The Montezuma-Rimrock Fire District was assisted by crews from Sedona and Verde Valley.
Identities of the drivers were not immediately available.
