Cowboys cruise into post season

First it was Pinon, then Rough Rock, Red Mesa, Valley Sanders, Williams and finally Many Farms as the Cowboys take another half-time victim by the score of 57-0.

The Cowboys are making minced meat out of their competition, and have ended the regular season, 8-2 overall and 6-1 in region play.

Zach Hauser continues to be a strong weapon for the Cowboys in the quarterback position, putting up some impressive passes, one of which was caught for a touchdown by Alex Lewis.

Shawn Smith also scored for the Cowboys on a 50-yard punt return in the first half. William Trahin helped the Cowboys with two touchdowns, but was sidelined by an injury coach Luke Steege hopes is not serious.

Damien Baca was also part of the strong Cowboys running game, getting around 100 yards with three touchdowns and a successful two-point conversion.

The Camp Verde defense did an outstanding job holding the Many Farms Lobos, allowing their offense to cross the 50-yard line only once in two quarter, never allowing the Lobos to pose any kind of a threat.

After the first quarter, the Cowboys were up 29-0. Then in about six minutes, the Cowboys tacked on 14 points in the first six minutes of the second quarter, then finished the Lobos off with another two touchdowns in the final minutes of the first half.

"The kids weren't really worried about this game," said coach Steege. "They are looking ahead to next week's playoff game."

Camp Verde will host the first round of playoffs against 2A East's Ray, which lost to Hayden Friday night, 28-21. Ray is 6-3 overall and 3-2 in region play.

"We are still having a little trouble defending the running play, this is something we are going to work hard at during practice next week," said Steege.

Everyone will be able to see if this practice will pay off as the Cowboys will face their first real challenge in over a month.

It seems though, if Camp Verde can continue this momentum and not underestimate their opponent, they will have a pretty good time running over their competition during playoffs and continue having one of the best football seasons in school history.

The first round of playoffs will begin next Friday at the Camp Verde football field. Game time is 7 p.m.
