Cowboys are on a roll
Camp Verde came from behind by scoring 35 points in the second half to take the lead and the win, beating Red Mesa 42-18.
The Cowboys played the first half of the game with less than impressive performances, but after a half time 'pep talk' by coach Luke Steege, the Camp Verde football team kicked it up a notch. This game marks the third game in a row that the Cowboys have come out ahead.
For the past couple of weeks, the Cowboys haven't been tested much. This showed Friday night as the Camp Verde team on both sides of the ball, just weren't hitting their marks.
Red Mesa received the ball in the opening kickoff and marched it down the field, monopolizing the better part of the first quarter in 18 plays until finally putting 6 points on the board.
Camp Verde answered back in their first possession on a Damien Baca seven-yard-run, to go ahead 7-6.
In the second quarter, Red Mesa mounted a big drive before the end of the half to go up 12-7.
"The team was over-confident in the first half. Red Mesa had us on our heels," said Steege.
Trailing by a touchdown, the Cowboys came out with new energy and new life. They scored on their first possession of the second half on a 41 yard Baca run to put them up 14-12.
Again, the Redskins answered back with a big run and a Cowboy penalty that resulted in a touchdown to put them back in the lead, 18-14.
Coach Steege then changed the Cowboys defense to a five-man front. After that, the Redskins were not able to gain the yardage they had done before and it gave the Cowboys a chance to start pulling away.
During the Redskins' last possession of the ball in the third quarter, Alex Lewis intercepted a pass and ran it back 38 yards for a touchdown, putting Camp Verde up 21-18. They would hold onto the lead throughout the fourth quarter.
Luke Hicks was six for six in PATs. Leading rusher Baca had 20 carries for 206 yards and three touchdowns. William Trahin had nine carries for 106 yards. Zach Hauser went seven for 15 in the air with 87 yards and a touchdown.
The offensive line had some really crucial blocks. Tyler Rezzonico, Beau Tudor, Casey Welsch, Patrick Logston, Emery Brown and Matt Bradley did a great job in the second half, keeping the Redskins' defense from penetrating through the line of scrimmage.
On defense, Tudor led with three sacks. Preston Brogdon recovered a fumble and Luke Hicks had an interception.
Sophomores Baca and Trahin are both making a difference on the Camp Verde team. Baca has now rushed for over 1,000 yards with 17 touchdowns. Trahin is also racking up the yardage and touchdowns, both becoming a big part of the Cowboys' success
This win moves the Cowboys up to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the region. Next up for Camp Verde is against Valley Sanders at home next Friday. Next Friday is also senior night. Valley (Sanders) was 4-1 coming into Friday's game against Pinon.
