Camp Verde girls soccer peaking at right time
The girls soccer team coasted through the last two games of the season as the Cowboys defeated Verde Valley, 3-0 and River Valley, 4-1 last week.
The game against Verde Valley was senior night for the Cowboys, so coach Mary Taylor played all of the seniors.
Ashley Petefish, Crystal Reyes, Maggie Monroe all scored goals against Verde Valley.
"The game against River Valley was a weird oneŠit was filled with penalty kicks and a red card for the other team," said Taylor.
There were a couple of great goals for the Cowboys against River Valley, one coming off of a left-footed kick by Cassie Brown to Rochelle Williams that headed the ball into the goal.
Another goal came from a one-on-one between Danielle Anderson and River Valley's goalie. Anderson lured the keeper away from the goal and she kicked it into the opposite side of the net.
This week, the team will be focusing on two main strategies to get ready for playoffs. The first one will be controlling the transition on defense and the second will be to work on setting up more solid shots from farther out.
The girls are excited about the playoffs according to coach Taylor. This year's team not only finished in a solid second place behind Sedona, but looks stronger than ever, with all players working cohesively on the field.
It is evident when watching them that their communication has vastly improved along with their comfort level on the field and confidence when shooting for the goal.
The Cowboys will face Snowflake in the first round of playoffs. Snowflake beat Camp Verde in a tournament earlier this season, their only game against each other this season. Camp Verde will have to step it up against them this time and even the score if they want to advance past the first round.
Playoffs start this Saturday and will be held at the Tempe Sports Complex.
