Gateways to promote mental health
Licensed Professional Counselor Janet O'Connell has spent the last year and a half as a therapist at Copper Canyon Academy, a facility recognized by Dr. Phil as one of the nations top therapeutic boarding schools. O'Connell's expertise in individual and family therapy is now offered at the Verde Valley Wellness Center, as well as her home office in Sedona.
"I specialize in working with adolescents and their families," O'Connell said. "I also have a strong love and lots of experience in working with adolescents that are adopted. Adopted teens face special challenges as they begin to form their identities."
O'Connell's other areas of expertise include substance abuse and dually diagnosed individuals. As a former crisis evaluator in five metropolitan emergence rooms, O'Connell also has first hand knowledge and experience dealing with individuals in crisis.
O'Connell said she chose the wellness center because she wants to be part of the various practices and services available there.
"My assessment of the Verde Valley is that it is in need of mental health providers," she said. "I am hoping my business will continue to grow and expand to meet this need. Families of the Verde Valley are facing challenges that are stressful and often seem insurmountable"
Gateways Counseling Services offer a sliding scale for under or uninsured clients. O'Connell said she will work with insurance companies and bill most of them.
Gateways is located at 291 S. Willard St., Suite 105, in Cottonwood. O'Connell also provides therapy for Sedona residents at her home office in West Sedona. O'Connell is available on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The business phone number is 274-0038.
