New charter school opens in Camp Verde
Promoting 'America's founding principles through a liberal arts education'
Those little stop signs emerging from the yellow buses and children running around with backpacks that seem to be as big as they are only means one thing, school is back in session. However, for the Camp Verde American Heritage Academy, school is not back in session, it is in session for the first time.
The nonprofit, K-3 and growing, public charter elementary school in Camp Verde has opened its doors.
Directors and Charter Holders Steve and Vicki Jo Anderson also founded the American Heritage Academy charter in Cottonwood in1995. It received its charter by the State of Arizona and is accredited through the Association for Performance Based Accreditation.
Steve and Vicki Jo are still putting the final touches on the Camp Verde school building, but that hasn't stopped students from sitting in its classrooms and playing on the swing set.
The couple expects to have a waiting list for the school, since they have capped the classrooms to approximately 20 students per class.
"We provide the best, focussed, classical liberal arts program in the Verde Valley, with some of the finest teachers," Steve said. "Our administration cares about kids who will become our future leaders."
Steve said he and Vicki Jo chose to open the school in response to a parent request for "quality classical education with a mission." Steve has lived in the Verde Valley for 35 years and Vicki Jo has been here her entire life.
The academy's mission statement is to "promote America's founding principles through a liberal arts education fostering personal greatness, community service, strong academic and leadership skills, while reaffirming hope in a caring environment."
Depending on further parent demand, the couple plans to expand, possibly to the high school level.
Uniforms are required and expelled students cannot enroll. The school offers sports, dances and student council.
The school is located at 132 General Crook Trail in Camp Verde. The academy is open Monday through Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
"Closed for families on Friday," Steve said.
