Howard Crane turned 102 on Thursday. He celebrated his birthday with family and friends at the Carefree Assisted Living Center in Cottonwood.
"He was still living on his own on his 100th birthday," said Howard's son, John Crane. "He would play cards and read. He thoroughly enjoyed everybody and everybody enjoyed him."
Later, while speaking of Howard to the crowd, John said, "He used to beat all the ladies at cards. He's a heck of a card player, right ladies?"
Howard worked for a telephone company in the Phoenix area for 43 years. He retired when he was 65. His daughter Mary Lou said he is still offered free phone service through the company.
Grandchildren, great grandchildren and other relatives and friends packed the room at the center for his birthday party.
A hamburger lunch was served and Howard was presented with a cake that read, "Happy 102nd birthday Howard -- what a special guy!"
