A dog of a day
Event raises money for the Humane Society of Sedona
Al Pacino was not at the Three Dog Bakery event on Saturday, but it was a Dog Day Afternoon. Aug. 26 was National Dog Day, a recently established holiday founded by Animal Trainer Colleen Paige from California.
The day was established to promote the adoption and rescue of dogs. Events were planned in places all over the country, including Sedona.
Three Dog Bakery in Uptown hosted an event to raise money for the Humane Society of Sedona. Animal communicator Jan Hoover and animal massage therapist Dian Arcaro provided their services for a $20 donation and the humane society was present with two dogs up for adoption. Rita Clare, a 16-year-old local artist, donated some of her art for a raffle. Local businesses also contributed to the raffle. All money raised, including 100 percent of the profits made at the store that day, went to the humane society.
Carol Servin, co-owner of Three Dog Bakery, said the event raised $510. Both dogs were adopted and the event triggered the adoption of three additional dogs.
The Humane Society of Sedona is in the process of raising money for its expansion project. More than $3 million is needed to completely remodel the existing facility and construct a two-story addition. The new facility will be 12,457 square feet, with more than 6,300 square feet of kennels and animal visitation area, 2,600 square feet of animal support and veterinary area and roughly 1,800 square feet of outdoor animal enclosures.
According to the humane society's Web site, "Šour shelter is showing signs of age. Our roof leaks in several areas. The concrete floors are cracked and joints are opening where the addition was attached to the original building. Although, the staff works diligently to keep the facility as clean as possible, the shelter still has an offensive odor and cracked concrete provides a breeding ground for potential disease."
Brittany Nigh with the humane society said, after the Three Dog Bakery event, the humane society is about mid-way in its fund-raising effort.
