Cowboy girls have solid finish to hoops season
The Camp Verde girls basketball team ended their regular season poised for success come the regional tournament with wins over Rough Rock and Red Mesa.
The Cowboys sprinted out the gate against Rough Rock Thursday evening as they scored 18 points to Rough Rock's four in the first quarter, setting the pace for the game. In the second quarter the Cowboys extended their lead by four and were up 32-14 at the half.
Both teams went neck and neck in the third quarter and in the fourth the Cowboys broke it open even more, scoring 24 points to Rough Rock's 13.
Laura Lee Oros continues to play strong for the Cowboys with 22 points and six rebounds. Cassie Spleiss scored an impressive 17 points and 12 rebounds and Sherry Dutton scored 12 points with six rebounds.
Camp Verde continued their winning momentum when they faced Red Mesa on the road Friday. Again, the Cowboys were up after the first quarter, 15-10 and then outscored Red Mesa 13-7 in the second quarter, giving them an 11 point lead going into the half.
The Cowboys stayed one step ahead of Red Mesa in the third quarter and was finally out scored in the fourth by four but the damage had been done and the Cowboys walked away with the 48-39 win.
Spleiss led the Cowboys in scoring with 15 points and nine rebounds, followed closely by Oros with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Rochelle Williams had a great game, scoring nine points with four rebounds and a steal and Kim Reddell had five rebounds.
"Its tough to play up north," said coach Mark Showers. "The girls did a great job holding off a furious comeback by Red Mesa to win."
The Cowboys finish their regular season with a record of 10-4 and the No. 3 spot in the region. They will host the first round of the regional playoff game on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 5:30 p.m. against the sixth seed Red Mesa.
