Oros, Spleiss and Dutton lead team during wins
The Camp Verde girls basketball team seems to have found their rhythm as they defeated Williams, Rough Rock and Red Mesa last week to improve their record to 11-8 overall and 5-2 in the region, grabbing a spot in the top three.
The Cowboys started out the week on Tuesday against Williams, where they dominated the game and won 45-32. Cassie Spleiss had a breakout game scoring 20 points and 10 rebounds, leading her team to a win.
On Thursday, the Cowboys faced Rough Rock and made short order of that team as they dominated on offense and defense and took away a 75-48 win. Laura Lee Oros who has been a consistent powerhouse for the Camp Verde team scored 17 points and 11 rebounds followed by Spleiss with 15 points and Sherry Dutton with 10.
Against Red Mesa on Friday, Camp Verde continued their winning ways by defeating their latest opponent, 59-37. This game was a little closer than the final score indicated, but in the fourth quarter the Cowboys broke it open with outstanding free throw shooting, making 19 of 22 and 27 of 39 attempts overall. Camp Verde as a team is shooting close to 60 percent at the line.
Spleiss has been a major factor for the Cowboys in recent games, hustling and finding ways to get the ball and make the play needed to give Camp Verde the edge. Rochelle Williams is also doing an excellent job as a defensive specialist according to coach Mark Showers.
"The kids are figuring out how to play this style of reservation ball," said coach Showers. "They (opponents) depend on us losing our composure after playing a very fast-paced and physical game, but the girls have done a great job staying focused and playing hard."
The team will be on the road to play the region's top team, St. Johns on Thursday. Hopefully the Cowboys can continue their winning streak. With the way they are playing, they have a great shot of surprising St. Johns on their own court.
