Cottonwood Cougars tie State Champs

The Cottonwood Cougars Roller Hockey Team showed that they came ready to play in their third Arizona In line Hockey Association (AIHA) Tournament at The Rollerplex in Phoenix last weekend.

Their hard work and dedication heightened their level of play. This was obvious when the Cougars found themselves with a 3-0 lead against last year's state champions.

In the final period the Cougars led 3-2 and with only 30 seconds left in the final minute the lead got snatched away and the game ended in a tie.

"This was such a great boost for our players, they need to know a win is within their reach," team assistant Candi Yatsinko said.

The Cougars have become a crowd favorite and continue to gain the respect amongst the AIHA League.

"The team has improved so much during this tournament series, I just hope we are able to raise the money we need to take them to the State Championships in May, being held in Tucson," coach Jeff Meilander said.

The Cougars are in need of funds to continue with this tournament series and take themselves to the finals in May.

"We are asking the community for their help," coach Meilander said. "Any size donation will help us make this possible for this team."

The Northern Arizona Roller Hockey Inc. (NAZRHI) is a nonprofit organization run solely on donations and volunteers.  Donations can be made payable to NAZRHI and mailed to P.O. Box 403, Clarkdale AZ 86324.

If you have any questions in regard to Cottonwood's Roller Hockey program or need additional information concerning making a donation, you can contact Yatsinko at 649-3135.

The Cougars' next tournament is in Prescott on Sunday, April 22.
