Mingus baseball team let the bats do the talking with 16-7 and 17-7 wins over Coconino

The Mingus Union baseball team traveled to Coconino on Saturday for a doubleheader against the Panthers. Two games later, the Marauders improved their record with both wins, 16-7 and 17-7.

It was total domination for the Marauders in the first game. Billy Grant started on the mound for Mingus and pitched two innings before Sean Simonz came in finished out the game.

Mingus jumped ahead 4-0 after the first inning. They led 6-2 after two. In the third inning though, the Marauders broke it wide open with a 7-run inning to take the lead 13-2. Coconino came back though and scored four runs in the bottom of the inning, to cut the Mingus lead to 13-6. Despite their efforts, the Panthers could never catch up as Mingus stayed one step ahead.

The Marauders out-hit the Panthers, 19-7. Leading at the plate were Billy Grant, who went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, Brandon Holmes went 3-for-5 with a double, homerun and three RBIs, Pat Moran went 3-for-5, Justin Schultz went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Sean Simonz went 2-for-6 with a homerun and three RBIs, Tony Vocca went 3-for-4 with a double and a homerun with two RBIs and Travis Wokasch went 2-for-3.

After the barrage of hitting on the Marauder bench in the first game, the Panthers' were given a clean slate for the second game. But resetting the scoreboard didn't help the hosting team as the Marauders continued to take control.

The second game started off closer with Coconino taking the lead 2-1 after the first inning. But a huge second inning by the Marauders put the game out of reach for the Panthers. Mingus scored 13 runs in the second inning rally. The Panthers rallied in the bottom of the fifth with five runs, but it was too little, too late as the Marauders took the game in five innings due to the mercy rule.

Trevor Sanderlin pitched a complete game, giving up nine hits and striking out four batters. On Mingus' offense, again the Marauder bench took turns crushing the ball. Mike Cook went 2-for-3, Spencer Earl went 3-for-4 with a homerun and three RBIs; Billy Grant went 2-for-3 with a double; Holmes went 3-for-4 with a double, homerun and four RBIs; Simonz went 3-for-5 with two RBIs; Vocca went 3-for-5; and Wokasch went 1-for-2.

With the wins over Coconino, the Marauders are 21-5 on the season and 9-0 against region foes. They have a few non-region games over the next week, and then the Marauders will face Sinagua on April 24 on the road, then return home on April 28 for Mingus' final regular season home games.
