Mingus girls soccer
The Mingus girls soccer team lost Tuesday afternoon to Cactus Shadows, 2-1. After two halves and overtime the Marauders found themselves in familiar territory. For the third time this season, the Marauders had to settle the game in penalty kicks.
Cactus Shadows is ranked No. 3 in the State and Mingus handled them well on the field.
"We came out fast and hard and took them by surprise and they weren't able to recover," said coach Joe Rongo. "We were definitely the underdogs."
Mingus scored the first goal about 15 minutes into the first half and dominated.
The second half was a much more even game. With both teams battling back and forth, the visiting Cactus Shadows found the goal with about 15 minutes left to tie the game up 1-1.
Time ran out in regulation and then again in overtime. When it came down to penalty kicks, Karen Van Gorp was the only Marauder to get the ball past the keeper and Cactus won the PKs 3-1 for the win.
The Marauders travel to Sinagua today for their final regular season game. Then they will most likely take on Coconino on the road on Tuesday for the first game of the region tournament.
