CV basketball teams win at home
It was a successful weekend at home for the Camp Verde boys and girls basketball teams. Both teams hosted Pinon and Many Farms for the Cowboys' final stand at home before the regional tournament.
The girls started things off on Friday by beating Pinon, 61-37. Then the Lady Cowboys came back the next day and finished Many Farms off with the same score of 61-37.
It was all Camp Verde on Friday during the girls' game. The Lady Cowboys jumped off to a nice 11-4 lead after the first period. Pinon fought back and cut the lead to only two by halftime.
There was no doubt who was in charge for the second half of the game. The Lady Cowboys came out shooting and outscored Pinon 16-7 in the third, then capped off the great night of play by scoring 24 points in the fourth for the win.
Sherry Dutton led the scoring with 19 points, followed by Cassie Spleiss with 16 and Cherreia Reeves with 10.
Without a rest, the Camp Verde girls basketball team came back the next day, Saturday and routed the visiting Many Farms, 61-37. Camp Verde left nothing to chance against the No. 1 team in the 2A North. In the first quarter, outscoring Many Farms, 15-2. The second quarter was all Many Farms as they scored 12 to the Cowboys' six, but Camp Verde still hung on to a healthy 21-14 lead at halftime.
Again the Lady Cowboys showed great enthusiasm and skill in the second half by scoring 17 points and extending their lead to 13. The fourth quarter was a free for all, as the Cowboys scored 23 to Many Farms' 12 to sweep their home court run by going 4-0 at home.
"The kids are playing more of unit defensively Many Farms," said Coach Mark Showers. "That's what made the difference."
Rochelle Williams had a great game against many Farms with 18 points and five steals. JoJo Garner and Liz Hicks each scored 10 points and Spleiss and Reeves each scored 10. Spleiss, Garner and Hicks led the team with seven rebounds apiece.
The Camp Verde boys basketball team kept the momentum going from the girls' wins over Pinon and Many Farms and went 4-0 at home as well.
The Cowboys jumped all over Pinon Friday night with a 21-12 lead after the first period. They continued to dominate in the second to go into the half with a huge 36-20 lead. Not to go quietly, the Pinon team battled back in the third, scoring 19 points, almost as many as they had in the entire first half.
After three periods, Camp Verde still hung on to a hefty 13 point lead. In the fourth, the Cowboys showed Pinon who was boss and scored 21 to their 15 to walk away with the decisive 73-54 win.
Saturday's game against Many Farms was a bit tougher for the Cowboys, but they pulled it out for the 74-67 win.
Many Farms took the lead in the first quarter, 12-8. But then the Cowboys caught on fire in the second quarter by scoring 35 points in a huge offensive attack to take the lead at halftime, 43-32.
High scoring didn't end, although it cooled down a bit as both teams came out in the second half and found the basket many times. Many Farms edged out Camp Verde in the third 22-20 but the Cowboys still maintained the lead.
Again, Many Farms outscored Camp Verde 13-11 in the fourth, but with that huge second quarter, the Cowboys held on to the lead and the win.
The girls and boys finish off the regular season on the road against Rough Rock on Thursday and Red Mesa on Friday.
Currently the boys team is 18-6 overall and 8-3 in conference. The are also 8-0 at home and is holding down the No. 3 spot in the 2A North region behind St. John's and Williams.
The girls are 19-6 overall and 9-3 in the region. They are 9-0 at home and hold the No. 2 spot in the 2A North.
Looking ahead: The first round of the region tournament will be hosted by both the girls and boys on Wednesday, Feb. 7. The girls game will be at 5:30 and the boys will play at 7 p.m. Once the rest of the region concludes its play, then the Cowboys will know who they will be up against.
