Esther C. Maharry

Esther Charlotte Maharry, 85, of Cottonwood, died March 5, 2007. Esther was born on Jan. 21, 1922, in Cartwright, N.D. She spent her early years there and in Fairview, N.D. In 1943 she joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps and received her training in Battle Creek, Mich. After resigning she moved to Tulelake, Calif., where she met her future husband. She was married to Vern Maharry on April l6, 1946.

Vern's brother got a homestead in southern Arizona near Gadsden. He asked Vern to go help establish a farm there. After several years Vern felt God's call to be a pastor so they left the farm and ministered at Mesa Vista Mission in Yuma, then went to Arizona Bible College in Phoenix for three years. Next they moved to Palo Verde to pastor a church there for 4.5, years and then to Gila Bend for eight years. The last church they served in was in Page for 17 years. After retiring they moved to Cottonwood where they have lived for the past 11 years. Esther loved growing flowers to make her home beautiful and was very active in teaching Sunday School, VBS and Awana in the churches where they ministered.

Esther is survived by her two children Charlene (Ron) Talbott, of Flagstaff, and Charles Maharry of Cottonwood; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. 

A memorial service in honor of Esther will be held at 11 a.m., March 24, at Palo Verde Baptist Church in Palo Verde. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Northern Arizona Hospice, 269 S. Candy Lane, Cottonwood AZ 86326
