John George Leibert

John George Leibert, 79, a resident of Cottonwood, died in Goodyear, Ariz., March 21.

He was born Oct. 31, 1927, in Whittier, Calif., to George Bowman and Marie Nathalie (Goethals) Leibert.  John grew up in Riverside, Calif., which was homesteaded by his parents and four other families. 

John served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  He then returned to Riverside and attended the University of California, where he received his bachelor's degree as a chemist. He later worked for the Riverside Cement Plant. It was also in Riverside that he met and married the love of his life, Martha Ann Kirkby.

In 1960, John and Martha moved to Cottonwood, where they raised two sons. John worked as a chemist for the Phoenix Cement Plant in the laboratory until his retirement numerous years later.  Following his retirement, John dedicated another nine years with Auto Zone before he finally decided to enjoy his retirement.

John is preceded in death by his parents, George and Marie Leibert; three sisters, Theresa Gordon, Patricia Turner and Nathalie Seigel; and one brother, David Leibert.  He leaves behind his wife of nearly 55 years, Martha Leibert of Cottonwood; his two sons, John R. "Robert" Leibert of San Francisco, and Kenneth E. "Kenny" Leibert of Round Mountain, Nev.; his brother, Peter Leibert with his wife, Virginia of La Mirada, Calif.; and his sister, Agnes Jones with her husband, Lee of Riverside, Calif,

A Memorial Service will be held in honor of John's Life on Thursday, March 29, 10 a.m., at Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood.
