Holidays at the Verde Valley Humane Society

The holidays are right around the corner and a countless number of you have expressed the desire to help the animals at the Verde Valley Humane Society.

Many of you have told us that you have a multitude of love in your heart and would love to adopt, but there just isn't any room left in your homes for another cat or dog. We now have the perfect solution for you.

Now there is a way to "adopt" a shelter animal without adding another animal to your household. You will still receive that warm feeling in your heart knowing that you helped and animal in need of a new home.

Please adopt one of our "VVHS Shelter Pets" which will in turn provide care and even some extras for the animals that are still waiting on new homes.

These "special adoptions" will require a minimum donation of $30.00. In turn you will receive a beautiful 7-7 1/2" "Russ Berrie" stuffed cat/dog, of your choice along with its very own adoption certificate and special handmade "luv blanket" to keep him or her warm.

One of the best parts of these adoptions is that the adoptable animals also come with a very special money back guarantee. Any animal you choose is guaranteed to be housebroken or litter box trained. What more could you ask for in a new pet?

Do you have an animal lover on your Christmas list that has everything? A "VVHS Shelter Pet" would be the perfect unique gift for that person. If you are adopting for a friend, a note card will be provided in your honor.

By adopting an animal for them not only are you helping the animals at the shelter, you found the perfect gift for your friend who has everything.

Think about how this will lessen your stress load since you won't have to be wandering around aimlessly hoping to find a gift.

A gift of adoption will also be much more personal than something like a gift card. You did take the time to think of them. You did choose the gift and it also shows that you do care.

Would you like to just adopt in memory of someone special? You can do that too. What a wonderful way to remember an animal lover that is no longer with us.

When I spoke with the "stork" about the new arrivals that I would need delivered, all I could think of was an "Animal Angel" named Buff Hopkins that passed away a few years ago. Buff just adored Schnauzers. He always asked "Do you have any Schnauzers Cyndi?"

Naturally I just had to find Schnauzers to place in our adoption batch. All of my desired breeds weren't available, but it just so happened that they had Schnauzers. I'm hoping someone will remember the wonderful man that Buff was and adopt a Schnauzer in his memory. He'd like that, I know that he would.

When you adopt one of our "VVHS Shelter Pets" for yourself or that someone special, for an animal or a person that you are remembering, your name, the name of who you are remembering, or the name you are adopting for will be placed on an ornament and hung on our Christmas tree this year. This ornament will be a symbol of your support for the homeless animals of the Verde Valley.

Did you realize that with a $30 donation VVHS can vaccinate and get a male cat altered? It wouldn't totally pay for a female cat to spayed, but it would make the cost less. Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

That same donation will vaccinate a 15-pound puppy against kennel cough and also against parvo/distemper. It would also purchase a tick collar and feed that same puppy for approximately 14-15 days. Puppy food is rarely donated, so it is normally purchased. Puppy food and kitten food really add to the VVHS expenses.

As the levels of donations go up in size, so do the amount of things that can be accomplished for the animals.

If the adoption donation was increased to $50 a male dog could be neutered. A female cat could be spayed and vaccinated against feline diseases. The options are numerous, depending on the size of the donation.

A donation coming in at $100 would spay a female dog, vaccinate her against rabies, get her the required parvo/distemper vaccination, provide kennel cough prevention, purchase a tick collar and feed her for about seven days.

The donations could also be used to reduce the adoption prices for perspective adopters. We already use this practice, but our funds are limited.

Our contracts with the different jurisdictions pay for the first three days of care at the Verde Valley Humane Society. If you frequent the shelter, you are aware that the animals are kept at the shelter five days before even becoming available for adoption. The rest of the animals stay is absorbed by VVHS.

Through your donations and the money brought in by our thrift store, the Good Buy Shoppe, at times we are able to keep the animals for many months.

As long as there is space and the animal can handle being caged, he or she will wait for their new home.

The "VVHS Shelter Pets" should be arriving at any time. They will be available for adoption no later than Monday, November 26th. Call the shelter at (928) 634-7387 to reserve an adoptive cat or dog. Your reservation will be held for 48 hours.

You may also stop in the shelter located at 1502 W. Mingus and take your "VVHS Shelter Pet" home with you the same day.

The available pets will also be at our thrift store, the Good Buy Shoppe. You will find the shop located at the corner of 89-A and Sixth St. The shop is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Shelter hours of operation are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. plus Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Another option is to mail your donation to VVHS at P.O. Box 1429, Cottonwood 86326 with a request for a cat or dog. Your new pet will be waiting for your arrival.

You may also designate if the animal is for you or if you need a card for someone special. Please also let us know the name request for the ornament.

These special adoptions are so important to the animals at the Verde Valley Humane Society. It is your way to help them without actually overfilling your home.
