Mingus Union track team takes on teams in Winslow

The Mingus Union track and field team took on opponents from around the State on Friday in the Winslow Invitational. The boys team did very well with a 5th place finish out of 19 teams with a total of 54 points. The girls also did well. They finished 8th out of 20 teams with 37 points.

The boys had many outstanding performances on the track and field. Daniel Jaimes finished 6th in the 400-meter in 54.77. Wilson Cutbirth finished 6th in the 800-meter run, followed by Bruce Logan in 10th and Alex Stratz in 12th.

In the 1600-meter run, Ky Mickelsen finished 4th overall in 4:39.69 followed by Cutbirth in 6th in 4:43.66.

Tim Freriks and Sam Hayes placed first and second in the 3200-meter run in 9:56.23 and 9:59.08 respectively. Freshman Hunter Rauch rounded out the scoring group with an 8th place finish in 10:39.08. The trio scored 19 points for the Marauders in that race.

The 4x800 relay team took first with a time of 8:36.39. In the field events, Michael Cartia placed 4th in the long jump with a distance of 18-feet, 5-inches and just missed out on scoring points in the high jump with a 9th place finish. Aaron Hauser continues to be a sold part of the team with a 3rd place finish in the shot put.

The girls also had a great day. Sarah Raber finished 5th overall in the 400-meter. Nicole Powers took 7th in the 1600-meter run in 5:44.07.

In the 300-meter hurdles, Carly Blair took 3rd in 50.90 and is just a few tenths of a second away from breaking Mingus' record. Teammate Deserada Braly in 6th with a time of 53:30.

The 4x800 relay team of Raber, Lisa Rauch, Nicole Power and Carly Blair, which broke Mingus' school record in the event last year is looking strong and strives to do it again this year. The relay team placed 3rd with a time of 10:22.96.

In the field events Leslie Kincaid placed 2nd overall in the pole vault with a height of 9-feet, 6-inches. Teammate Ellie Comstock followed in third place with a height of 8-feet. The duo racked up 14 points for the Marauders. Kinkade is just inches away from the Mingus school record in this event.

Molly Westcott rounded out the scoring for the marauders with a 7th place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 30-feet, 8-1/2-inch.

The Marauders will travel to Page on Saturday for the regional meet. Then those athletes that qualify for State will compete at Mesa Community College on May 9-10.
