MSgt Robert C. (Chad) Smith

MSgt Robert C. (Chad) Smith is ready to retire after 24 years in the U.S. Army. Born at the former Marcus J. Lawrence Hospital in Cottonwood in 1966, he joined the Army in July 1984 with basic training and MP School at Fort McClellan, Ala.

For the last seven years he served with Delta Force as a staff sergeant and retires as a master sergeant.

After graduating, he immediately went to Jump School at Fort Benning, Ga., graduating in December 1984. He was assigned to the 82nd Military Police Company/82nd Airborne Division until May 1987.

As a paratrooper and patrolman, Smith served a six-month peace-keeping mission in Sinai, Egypt, with multi-national forces and observers, rising from PFC to SPC rank.

In June 1987, he enlisted in the Arizona Army National Guard and was assigned to the 855 MP Company in Phoenix, gaining the rank of sergeant.

He was deployed to Operation Desert Storm, serving as a team leader during the Gulf War.

He went back on active duty in July 1991 and was assigned to Arizona Joint Counter Narcotics Task Force for the Department of Public Safety.

Smith was assigned to the 401st MP Company at Fort Hood, Texas, in 1995 and as a squad leader served a six-month tour in Panama conducting law enforcement. He was a member of the post Special Reaction Team (SWAT).

He performed a second tour with the MFO in Sinai while assigned to the 82nd Military Police Company based in Fort Bragg, N.C. In 2001, Smith was assigned to Delta Force as force protection sergeant and jumpmaster for Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

MSgt. Smith retires Dec. 1, 2008, as a master parachutist with 82 parachute jumps in honor of his beloved 82nd Airborne Division.
