24th Verde Valley Toy Run ready to roll Sunday
Run collects toys for underprivileged children
When riders with the 24th Annual Verde Valley Toy Run gather at Wal-Mart in Cottonwood Sunday, Nov. 23, they will be looking for toys and cash to help more than 1,500 deserving children have a happy holiday season.
Rev. Papa Dave Treadwell is the coordinator of this event. "I inherited it from Rose Ortiz," Dave said. "This is my fourth year."
He said the toy run looks for all types of toys for all age groups of children. "The best we can figure is there are about 1,500 kids in the Verde Valley assisted through this program," Dave said. "We had a record last year with bicycles. We had 19."
He said the organizers are worried about what will happen this year with the economy being down. "There aren't enough toys to go around."
He said more than 300 bikers and hot rod owners registered for last year's run. But many people other than participants donate to the cause. "A lot of people drop off a toy or $20," he said.
Dave said the money is distributed through Catholic Charities and Healthy Families/Healthy Babies at Verde Valley Medical Center. "They've identified specific needs," Dave said. He said this year many more families will need the community's support.
Registration will be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. in the Wal-Mart parking lot. The registration fee is $20 plus one new unwrapped toy per person. Each participant receives a VVTRXXIV commemorative T-shirt.
The bike and hot rod parade and poker run leaves Wal-Mart at 10:30 a.m. Stops include the Rockin' B & Silk Biker Style in Cottonwood, Bolers in Camp Verde, Flinn's in Rimrock, the Old Corral in Cornville, PJ's Village Pub in VOC and ends at the Full Moon Saloon in Tequa Plaza in the VOC.
The public is invited to the Full Moon Saloon for an afternoon of fellowship from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Admission for non-riders is one new unwrapped toy. Dinner will be available for $5.
Tickets will be sold for chances at lots of great raffle prizes. Other prizes will be auctioned. Live music will be provided by Have Mercy.
