Newspaper wins six state awards
Verde Valley Newspapers received six statewide awards Saturday and swept its category for opinion writing.
The Arizona Newspaper Association presented its Better Newspapers Contest winners during its annual Fall Conference. Verde Valley Newspapers, comprised of The Verde Independent, Camp Verde Bugle and Kudos, had entries in the non-daily division with circulation 3,500-10,000.
An editorial titled "Camp Verde government needs that lone voice of dissent" won first place for Managing Editor Raquel Hendrickson in the column, analysis or commentary category. Editor Dan Engler took second in the same category with his editorial "City should re-examine its procedures." Hendrickson had the third-place editorial with "Innocent or guilty, Renzi should resign."
Staff Reporter Steve Ayers received second place in best news features for his story "On the half-shell" about turtles at Montezuma Well, and Engler was third in the same category for his coverage of the death of Brian Mickelsen, "Brian Remembered."
Hendrickson was second in the best news story category for coverage of a student picket at a Camp Verde Unified School District board meeting, "Silent Protest."
