Calling all Christmas Angels to aid Meal on Wheels seniors
For the third year, Sedonan Brenda Cosse is collecting much-needed items as Christmas gifts for Verde Valley seniors that are in the Meals on Wheels program in partnership with the Verde Valley Senior Citizens program.
The Meals on Wheels program for homebound seniors makes sure that at least one good hot nutritious meal is provided daily and also gives them much needed contact with another human being.
Most seniors participating in the Meals On Wheels program in the Verde Valley do not have family watching over them.
Last year, the efforts spearheaded by Cosse enabled them to collect, wrap and deliver gift bags to 240 households.
This year, their goal is to put much needed gift bags under the tree in 300 households.
Suggested gift donations include the following: Lap blankets or warm shawls, hand towel and wash cloth sets, Non-drying shampoo and conditioner, body soap, bar soap, tooth paste and brushes, body lotions, hair brush and comb sets, denture cleaners such as Efferdent and Polident, a $20 gift certificate to a local grocery store and soft warm slippers.
While seniors living in assisted living programs are given some of these basic necessities, there is no such program for those seniors that are on their own.
Approximately 70 percent or the seniors receiving home delivered meals are unable to pay for them.
This past year the biggest hurdle for the Verde Valley Senior Citizens program has been keeping up with the rising costs of food, packaging materials, fuel and utilities.
Any involvement or donation is appreciated.
Please wrap all gifts and put a tag or label on the outside stating what the package is and what color for sorting to male or females.
For more information please call Brenda Cosse at 282-1524.
The deadline for gift pickup is Dec. 12.
