COTTONWOOD -- The Mingus Boys Tennis Team won their final regular season match of the year and became co-champs in the Grand Canyon Conference with Bradshaw Mountain. Both teams went undefeated in conference play except for a loss against each other. The split earned each a share of the title.

The final season win gives the Marauders a 9-3 overall record and a trip to the state team tournament. The only losses in 4A-II were to number one Notre Dame early in the season and a close 4-5 loss to Bradshaw Mountain.

The final season win came against a much improved Page team. Mingus took two of the three doubles matches and split the singles.

In doubles, Alex Lineberry and Paul Paradise teamed up for the first time since being undefeated in fifteen doubles matches last year to win a solid 8-1 match at the number one spot.

Tanner Walz and Houston Sauer followed with an important win in an exciting 7-5 tiebreaker.

In singles, Mingus won the top three spots to seal the overall team victory. Lineberry won 6-1, 6-0 at the number one spot and Paradise followed up with 6-1, 6-1 sets. At number three, Bobby Lee came back to win the second set 6-3 and finish up with a strong 10-5 tiebreaker.

Tanner Walz and Andrew Hickey fell short in 9-11 and 8-10 tiebreakers while Houston Sauer was off his mark and lost in straight sets.

The Marauders played some tough matches the last two weeks in unfavorable circumstances. They have shown great attitudes and work ethic in getting some hard fought overall team wins.

Mingus will have to wait until April 23 to see how the power rankings end up to know what they will be seeded at state. However it turns out, Mingus will at least have a first round home match at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28.

Next up for the Marauders, is the regional tournament which begins April 23 at 10 a.m. at the Mingus courts. The regional tournament will decide who the Grand Canyon Region sends to the state individual tournament which will be held May 1 at the Paseo Racquet Club in Phoenix. Last year, the Marauders had their best 4AII finish ever with a state runner up in singles and a third place finish in doubles.
