The Mingus Union baseball team continues to steam roll over region opponents. This time the Marauders solidified themselves at the top team in the Grand Canyon Region with a win over Coconino on Friday, 16-0.

It only took five innings for the visiting Marauders to rack up 16 runs and keep the Panthers almost quiet with only one hit and no runs.

Trevor Sanderlin started on the mound. He pitched three innings, allowed just one hit and struckout four batters. Tony Vocca came in to relieve in the fourth inning and shut the Panthers down, allowing no hits, one walk and three strikeouts.

"Neither had pitched all week, so I wanted to give them some throwing time," said coach Bob Young. "We'll do the same next Tuesday."

Both teams went scoreless in the first inning. Then in the top of the second, the Marauder bats came alive and the Panther pitching cooled. Mingus had six hits in that inning, which would have been dangerous enough. But the Panthers' pitching had trouble and along with the hits were six walks, including four in a row. By the time Mingus had gotten their three outs, the Marauders had scored 11 runs.

Mingus scored again in the top of the fourth inning when CJ Taylor led off with a homerun. Then with two outs, Zwart got up and hit another homerun to give Mingus a 13-0 lead. The Marauders weren't done yet.

In the top of the fifth inning Shaun McCarty led off with a walk. Vocca followed with an RBI double. Jesse Timm took one for the team to put runners at first and second. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Sanderlin hit a single and scored Vocca. Taylor grounded out into a double play, but before the Panthers could get the third out, Timm scored from third. That inning gave Mingus a 16-0 lead. The Panthers were blanked and the Marauders got the win.

The Mingus bats came alive against the Panthers. Each player took their turn at the plate. Hunter Zwart went 2-for-3 with a double, homerun and three RBIs. Sanderlin went 2-for-3 with a 3-run homer and a total of four RBIs. CJ Taylor came up with the really big power, going 2-for-3 with two homeruns and three RBIs. Vocca was perfect, going 3-for-3 with a single, double and triple. He was one homerun shy of hitting for the cycle.

In total, the Marauders racked up 11 hits and had no errors on defense.

The Marauders have gone 9-0 in conference play. They clinched the Grand Canyon Region Championship after beating Sinagua on Tuesday and are just one win away from having a perfect, 10-0 record through region play.

On Tuesday, the Marauders will host Bradshaw Mountain. The last time Mingus played the Bears, the Marauders easily won, 12-1.

"The last time we played [Bradshaw Mt], they struggled with pitching," said coach Young. "But they swing the bat well. You never know from one game to the next."

After the Bradshaw Mountain game on Tuesday, the Marauders will have little time to rest before going head first into the regional tournament. The pig-tail game will be on Thursday. Then on Saturday, May 2 the Marauders will host the winner of the pig-tail game. If Mingus wins, then they will host the Region Tournament Championship game on Tuesday, May 5.

The State Tournament begins on Saturday, May 9 at 11 a.m. Mingus will host the first round game.
