Baba Vusi Shibambo and the Rhythm Keepers coming to Sedona
South African World Music, drumming and stories Aug. 15

The Sedona Performers Guild is pleased to welcome Baba Vusi Shibambo and the Rhythm Keepers to the stage on Saturday, Aug. 15 at 8 p.m. Shibambo is a master hand drummer, international touring performer and recording artist as well as a Sedona resident.

He will be joined by members of the band Skin Deep along with the artist Ayande, also from the area. An evening of indigenous rhythms, tribal beats, and ancient artforms blending to create an exciting showcase, the first for the group at Studio Live.

The art of drumming runs deep with Shibambo. The name itself is a Zulu word for "guardian of the skins". Shibambos were highly valued for caretaking of animal skins that were used for clothing and prized ceremonial drums in the tribe. Baba Vusi Shibambo began playing African drums when he was young, growing to tour internationally.

The artist has had the honor of playing for Nelson Mandela a number of times and worked as a choreographer and orchestrator on the film "Out of Africa." A multi-instrumentalist, he is skilled on a variety of percussion instruments including African Djembe, uudu, conga, marimba, mbira (kalimba or finger piano) and even the Bushman's bow.

The show will be a journey of rhythmic sound and stunning visual presentation. Advance tickets are available for $12 in advance or $15 at the door.
