Verde Valley Medical Opens New Maternity/OB Ward
The ribbon was cut on an important new feature of Verde Valley Medical Center's $35 million expansion. Hospital officials brought the public up to the top of the new four-story east tower to show them the VVMC Maternity and Women's Services Unit. The new high tech facility will bring "the very best" in maternity services in the Verde Valley, said Dr. Dennis Reed, Chairman of the Perinatal/ OB Committee. The hospital now attends to 800 births each year. Looking on from the front row was Becky Cranmer, wife of Dr. Owen Cranmer, at one time the Upper Verde's only "baby doctor." His son, Rick, is now a member of the hospital board. The specialized unit got a big boost from Frank and Irmie Schuster, formerly of Sedona, whose trust left a million dollars to the hospital. The couple loved children, even though they had none of their own. Robin Matteo, R.N. and Director of Perinatal/OB Services, says the hospital "built a resort-like setting" in the new section. The remarkable facility receives an expectant mother and family in quiet room setting with muted lighting, comfortable surroundings and expansive Valley views. Rather than hustling the mother off down the hall to another room for the delivery, hospital staff comes to the mother, the cabinets unfold with the needed equipment and the delivery begins.
