Do you believe in miracles?

The Verde Valley Humane Society “Pet of the Week” is Duke, a large male boxer mix. Don’t let his size fool you. He is a gentle giant. He is very quiet when everyone else is making noise in their kennels. He waits very patiently for his turn to be walked by the volunteers.

Many of you come in and speak with me or run into me somewhere and tell me how you follow the Pet Corner on a weekly basis.

You speak about how much you appreciate it and enjoy it, but the thanks really goes to the Verde Independent. They provide us with the space free of charge each week.

Often you request columns that have been published in the past and often you request your very favorite.

It makes me feel good to know that I can touch you all in different ways. I know that the time I put into writing is appreciated.

As I look back through all of the published columns, I noticed how many have been dedicated to VVHS needing a new facility over the years.

The need for a new facility has always been known, but reaching the goal has been very hard to achieve. At times it seemed almost impossible.

You have read me beg and you have felt my tears and heartbreak over the years. This time can you see my smile and feel the happiness in my heart?

The column this week is one that we have all been waiting for. The easiest way to say it is yes, I believe in miracles.

A couple of weeks ago the generous donors that gave us the initial $500,000 came forward again.

They have seen us struggle to get the final funds needed to complete Phase I and have realized that it’s a very slow process for us.

Their goal was the same as ours. Making sure that the animals never had to spend another winter in the cold was one of our biggest concerns.

This magnificent generous couple has once again come forth with a huge donation of $120,000 additional dollars.

Can you believe this? I have to say that I sat at my desk and cried. This time it wasn’t because I was sad, but because I know if we all pitch in we can finally do it.

What does that mean when it comes to opening the new facility? It means we are almost ready to open the doors.

All we need is approximately with $25,000 more and we will be opening Phase I. With positive thoughts we can make this happen.

Before I go any further I would like to stress the importance of each and every one of you and all that you have done to help the animals.

Thank for your patience and dedication. We are very thankful for everything you have done, but the animals need you; we need you, now more than ever.

There will be many ways to help us finish the Adoption Center. Something for everyone and all price ranges.

Still looking for a way to honor someone special? We have many ways that will last a lifetime.

While making a tribute to someone special, you will be helping us reach our goal in a way that everyone will see.

The ways to remember someone are numerous. You can memorize birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, engagements, graduations and of course “In Memory Of” and “In Honor Of.”

Do you have other things that you would like to commemorate? We’d love to have those too.

If you would like to name rooms or kennels you will find all price ranges. I would love to see these areas named by the families or businesses.

Each area will be marked with a plaque and any provided pictures.

• Lobby - $35,000

• Educational/Meeting Room - $50,000

• Retail Shop - $10,000

• Grooming Salon - $15,000

• “Kitty Korner” Play Area - $15,000

• Get Acquainted Rooms - $20,000

• Animal Surrender Room - $10,000

• Dog Kennels - $5,000

• Cat Condos - $3,000

Would you rather see something growing and thriving around the new facility or in the courtyard?

We will be offering beautiful trees, shrubs and plants each with their own commemorative plaque next to them.

Of course this greenery will be professionally irrigated and planted by landscapers.

How about a beautiful tree with your new baby’s name and birth date the plaque? Watch the tree grow with your child.

Have you been married for many years? What about a well-established tree to celebrate your love for each other?

There are so many ways to say something and you can be creative in your own way.

• 24” - Evergreen box tree - $650

• 24” - Deciduous box tree - $515

• 15 - Gallon blooming tree - $250

• 15 - Gallon deciduous tree - $220

• 15 - Gallon shrubs - $220

• 5 - Gallon shrubs - $100

• 1 - Gallon flowering plants - $ 25

To enjoy the beautiful courtyard and outside of the facility all of these things will be necessary. What better way to say I love you, I remember you to someone?

Lining our entry and courtyard will be cement pavers and park benches. These pavers can be engraved just like the plaques that can be put on the park benches.

• Engraved cement pavers 4x8 - $90

• Engraved cement pavers 5 1⁄2 x6 - $50

• Cement park benches - $600

• Wooden park benches - $300

More good news, we have been given extra time on our engraved pavers. We can continue to take orders even after the facility has opened.

These “Bricks of Honor” will pave the way to the new facility. I am hoping to see everyone’s name that has stuck by us and help us on our Crusade.

If you choose to put your “furry best friend’s name on the paver, I hope you use your last name so I will always be able to tell who is who on the pathway.

Once we open the doors we will continue to need your help. There will be double the utility bills and other expenses.

Would you like to sponsor a dog or a cat kennel each month? Your pledge will continuously support and help care for the animal while waiting for adoption.

These kennels and cat cages can be sponsored by individuals, groups, businesses, school groups or clubs.

Anyone can be a sponsor and have a plaque in place. We can also put a business logo or picture on the plaque.

• Dog and cat cages (please specify)

• Individual sponsors (monthly) - $25

• Groups (monthly) - $50

• School groups monthly (monthly) - $25

• Clubs (monthly) - $50

• Businesses (monthly) - $100

• New mom with baby kennel - $50

• Newborns/no mom kennel - $75

There are other ways to help us if you have in-kind services or products that you can provide.

Do you have any in-kind services that you may want to provide? Are you handy around the house and have some free time on your hands?

We will be in need of new office furniture and living room furniture to set up our “Get Acquainted” rooms like homes. Is that a product you could donate?

We have been very fortunate when it comes to items being donated to our thrift store, the Good Buy Shoppe.

Some of the furniture you will see are items that have been donated by you and your neighbors.

Of course we still need toilets, medicine cabinet or mirror, bathroom sinks, small and large refrigerators, chest freezer, office supplies, file cabinets and many more items. Gift cards would be a huge help.

Anything that can be donated to us will help cut the cost on the new facility. It may enable us to even build more than just Phase I.

When Phase I is complete, we are half way to the completion of the new building. With the Verde Valley growing by leaps and bounds we will eventually need all of the space we can get.

To make a donation you can stop in the shelter located at 1502 W. Mingus or mail your choice of donation to:

Verde Valley Society/Building Fund

P.O. Box 1429

Cottonwood, AZ 86326

You can also continue to support us by donating, volunteering and shopping at the Good Buy Shoppe. The proceeds from the shop help fund the Verde Valley Humane Society.

Today I have given you many ways to help the animals at the Verde Valley Humane Society in the days to come and even now.
