Letter: Convenience does not come before safety

Editor:

Round and round we go. The city is thinking of putting a roundabout at the intersection of Mingus and Willard?

Roundabouts are designed for a more balanced flow of traffic, emphasis on flow. That is the reason why the roundabouts were installed between Cottonwood and Clarkdale. But to put a round about on a busy intersection in the heart of two schools is to ignore the safety of our children.

I understand the city would like to eliminate the traffic congestion that is prone to this stretch of Mingus, especially during school drop-off and pick-up times.

However, it is disheartening to see the city actually consider such an unsafe option. My experience both driving and walking through the roundabouts is that cars do not signal when turning out of the round about. As a pedestrian it is a little frightening, to say the least.

When you consider the young children trying to navigate this type of situation you can't help but think of a pending tragedy. At such a busy intersection a traffic light is the best option, regardless of the extra cost.

We need to consider the best options, the safest options, not the easiest and most convenient options.
