David John Payne 1936 - 2009
David John Payne, age 72, was born on August 23, 1936, in Bronx, N.Y, and died peacefully after a long battle with cancer, on February 11, 2009, in Cottonwood, Arizona. David was raised by the late Charles and Jane Gilman of Sussex, N.J.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elaine Ross of Cornville, Arizona, his sisters Peg Checkur of Sussex, N.J., and Irene Gilman of New York, N.Y., his daughter, Deena Payne of Washington, many nieces and nephews living in New Jersey and California, and his beloved dogs.
David and Elaine were married for 29 years, living the last 22 years in Sedona, and Cornville, Arizona. He and Elaine were married in, and members of the Unitarian Church, Montclair, N.J. David graduated from Sussex High School, Sussex, N.J. in 1955, and received his B.A. in Education and U.S. History at Montclair State University in 1959, and later, his M.A. in U.S. History from Montclair State. He taught U.S. History and Sociology at the High School level in N.J.
For a number of years David owned and operated a home repair and renovation business in Montclair, N.J. . Upon moving to Arizona, David and Elaine ran a small B&B in Sedona for 11 years. They became avid horse people and shared their lives with an eclectic collection of horses, dogs, cats and birds.
David was always proud of his Native American ancestry; his grandfather was a member of the Delaware Tribe in N.J. He will be remembered for his love of animals and his quiet, soft-spoken way with people.
