Marauders give their all at scorching State meet
Mingus track & field team went up against best at Mesa Community College
MESA -- The Mingus Union Track & Field team competed at the State Track Meet finals at Mesa Community College on Saturday. The preliminaries were run on Wednesday, May 13.
Leading the girls' team was Lesli Kinkade in the Pole Vault. This year she took 2nd at State with a height of 10-feet, besting her height of 9-feet last year for 4th place. Carly Blair placed 4th in the 300-hurdles with a time of 48.24, improving her State time of 49.50 last year. Over this season, Blair lowered the school record in the event a couple of times.
The girls 4x100 relay team of Torey Braly, Sarah Raber, Cierra Smith and Molly Westcott finished 5th overall in 50.99. A week prior, the foursome set a Grand Canyon Region record with a time of 50.51. The 4x800 relay team of Blair, Henley, Emma Schraner and Sarah Raber placed 6th in 10:20.54. Raber also placed 6th in the 400-dash in 1:01.65. Her best of the year was 58.7 but she was sick for the State Competition. She still competed, but the illness reflected in her times.
On the boys' team, Tim Freriks was the top scorer with a 6th place finish in the 1600-meter in a time of 4:24.87 and a 5th place finish in the 3200-race in 9:34.04. In the field events, Robert Ortiz finished 9th in the triple jump at 41-feet, 3-inches. He also placed 15th in the long jump at 18-feet, 9-1/4 inch jump.
After two days of competition, the girls team placed 9th out of 27 teams with 24 points while the boys placed 22nd out of 28 teams with seven points.
