ASU engineering projects submit proposals for Clarkdale Sustainability Park
CLARKDALE -- Two Arizona State University Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS GOLD) teams of engineering undergraduates submitted ASU Innovation Challenge proposals on behalf of projects bound for the Town of Clarkdale. Based on the guiding principles of the program, projects for consideration must be "GOLD": Green and Sustainable; Original and Creative; Promote Leadership Development and Teamwork; and be based on Design and Engineering Fundamentals.
Led by Professor Richard Filley, Director of EPICS at the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering at ASU, the students reviewed the Clarkdale Sustainability Park website and white paper, and then journeyed from Tempe to Clarkdale to perform due diligence on their projects. They met with Town officials for an introduction to the boundaries and geography of Clarkdale coupled with a question-and-answer session, and then proceeded on for a tour of the area.
Based on their findings, one team is hoping to work on a wetlands recharge project; the other is applying for funds to perform a waste to energy project. While all grant proposals compete for funding and neither project is assured of support, funding decisions are anticipated by the middle of January 2011. This is hoped to be the first of many university and Town collaborations prompted by the creation of the Clarkdale Sustainability Park project. In addition, new opportunities to work with ASU students are anticipated with the launch of the multi-disciplinary engineering capstone course in spring 2011. At ASU, engineers complete final projects, demonstrating their abilities to tackle complex problems for businesses and communities alike.
"This type of collaboration promotes exactly the sort of educational relationships we're seeking to build in the CSP; those reaching students keen on sustainability issues while providing an opportunity to engage in real-world problem-solving and project management," said Mayor Doug Von Gausig.
