GIRLS SOCCER: 2X Region Champions
The Mingus Union girls soccer team clinched the 4A II Grand Canyon Region Title on Friday with a 4-0 win over Mohave. The Marauders then cemented their spot at the top of the 4A II Power Points with a win over Page, 6-0 on Saturday.
This is the second year in a row that the Marauders have claimed the top spot in the region and the State.
Against Mohave, Natalie Rivera led things off with a goal off of a Torey Braly assist. Rivera scored a second goal by beating the Mohave defender around the outside and getting past the goalie on a 1-on-1 shot. The next two goals were both by Braly. The first was a give-and-go combination with Rivera and the second was off of a Drea Duke assist.
The next day, the Marauders traveled to Page to take on the Sand Devils. The first goal came at 2:15 into the game when Rivera scored off of a Braly assist. The second goal of the first half was knocked in by Rivera, off of a Kayla Dixon assist, 19-minutes into the half.
In the second half, the Marauders scored their third goal eight minutes in when Duke found the back of the net off of a Rivera assist. The fourth goal of the game came with 18:25 left by Duke off of another Rivera cross.
In the last 10 minutes of the game, coach Buddy Rhodes brought Tessa Fanning out of the goal and let her play up front. To the excitement of her team and the crowd, she scored the last two goals. The first off of a Kayla Dixon assist with 2:57 left to play and the other was a beautiful header off of a Bri Nevitt cross just 40-seconds later.
In the regular season, the Marauders ended up 11-0. The Marauders dominated their opponents, outscoring them 50-1 during the season. The only goal scored on Mingus was by 4A I Prescott.
Senior goal keeper Tessa Fanning had 58 saves while allowing only one to get past her.
"The offense always seems to get their name in the paper but on this team they will be the first to give credit for a successful season to our defense Rylie Backus, Des Braly, Lex Nevitt, Jessie Zaske and Alina Mouritesen who also played mid with Kayla Dixon Kelsey Huber and MacKenzie Mabery," said coach Buddy Rhodes. "Our backup keeper and forward sub Courtney Hageman and forward subs Bri Nevitt and Nataly Escamilla played a key role in our success, as did Ana Guerrero and Cortlin Sandoval who we brought up from JV after injuries. We of course would have had more goals had we not lost 4-year starter Cassie Bailey to a knee injury."
The Marauders host the 1st round of the 4A II State Soccer Tournament today at 4 p.m.
