Plenty to do on July 4 weekend
Independence Day celebrations across Sedona, Verde Valley
VERDE VALLEY - Residents and visitors in the Verde Valley will have many Fourth of July activities and celebrations - including fireworks displays - Saturday and Sunday.
The special weekend gets started Saturday morning at 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Tlaquepaque's Sizzlin' Summer Bash in Sedona. This celebration will feature pie-eating contests, potato sack races, face painting, crafts for kids, (all kids' activities take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) great barbecue and all kinds of music - Dixieland, hot jazz and blues.
This event will take place in the Arts and Crafts Village of Tlaquepaque, located at 336 Hwy 179, south of SR 89A, at the Oak Creek Bridge.
The annual Beaver Creek Duck Race begins at noon on Saturday, and it is sponsored by the Beaver Creek Kiwanis Club. The race starts in Wet Beaver Creek and ends at the Lake Montezuma Bridge next to Sycamore Park. On Saturday morning, the 2010 Beaver Creek Fourth of July Parade will take place at 9:30 a.m. and travel along Montezuma Avenue from Sycamore Park, beside the Beaver Creek bridge, to Rollins Park, across from the golf course
Later on Saturday, Cliff Castle Casino presents the Creedence Clearwater Revisited Concert with gates opening at 6 p.m. Tickets are $55 for VIP, $40 preferred and $30 general.
The casino is located at Exit 289 on I-17.
Activities on July Fourth begin in Clarkdale Sunday at the Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration. VFW Post 7400 will present the colors in the Town Park at 7 a.m. A pancake breakfast put on by the police department and fire district starts at the same time.
The big event - the 4th of July Kids' Parade - starts at 9 a.m. The route will start at Clarkdale-Jerome School and heads down Main Street past the Town Park.
From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. events and activities take place. Those include children's games sponsored by Clarkdale-Jerome School, fire engine rides, the Clark Memorial Library Ice Cream Social and music performed by the Cottonwood Community Band.
Also in Clarkdale, the Verde Canyon Railroad's Firecracker Express gets started at 11 a.m. with an all-American barbecue at the train station's shaded depot. The Firecracker Express train ride departs the station at 1 p.m., and it returns at 5 p.m.
The Verde Canyon Railroad is located at 300 N. Broadway, Clarkdale.
In Sedona, swimming at the community pool will be free from 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. An adult must accompany all small children.
The Sedona Community Pool is located at 570 Posse Ground Road behind the West Sedona School gymnasium.
In Cottonwood Sunday, the 11th annual Independence Day Fireworks Extravaganza gets under way at 4 p.m. in the Cottonwood Kids Park on 12th Street next to the Verde Valley Fairgrounds.
This free event includes free food until about 6 p.m. There will be children's activities, including water slides, giant inflatable rides and watermelon-eating contest. Soft drinks, roasted corn, glow necklaces and other items will be available for purchase.
The countdown to the fireworks display begins at 7:45 p.m. with music and a patriotic salute by the VFW Color Guard. At 8:45 p.m. it's time to get comfortable for the 35-minute fireworks celebration.
Back at Cliff Castle on the Fourth from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. will be a free party in the Stargazer Pavilion. Kids can enjoy a jumping castle, and everyone is invited to a free picnic with hot dogs, chips and drinks.
The casino's fireworks display starts at 9:15.
