Busy months ahead at Sedona Public Library

My earliest memory of going to the public library was when I was around four years old.  Growing up as a "Daddy's girl," I spent Saturday mornings with my dad.  One of our favorite activities was an excursion to the library to get books.

I grew up in Hamilton, Ohio, where our community library is housed in a lovely old Victorian structure.

A local philanthropist named Clark Lane constructed the building in 1866. As you can imagine, the Lane Public Library had many wonderful nooks and crannies where a four year old could cuddle up with a good picture book.

My favorite spot was a bay window seat where my father introduced me to the magic of books. It is this love of reading and passion for books, as well as a 33-year teaching career in public education that I bring to the position of manager of the Sedona Public Library in the Village.

The library offers many activities for the community.  Fall promises to be a very busy time for Sedona Public Library.

Grab your calendar to take note of the upcoming library events to be held at Sedona Winds at 405 Jacks Canyon Road in the Village:

• Monday, Nov. 22 at 1:30 p.m. - AHC Community Discussion of the book entitled A Thousand Splendid Suns written by Khaled Hosseini.

• Monday, December 13 at 1:30 p.m. -Todd Weber will share an in-character presentation of John Wesley Powell.  Mr. Weber is a John Wesley Powell historian who currently resides in Prescott.

All AHC programs are brought to the Village of Oak Creek through a partnership with the Arizona Humanities Council, the Sedona Public Library's Board of Trustees, and Friends of the Library.

All programs are free and open to the public. If you have questions about AHC programs, please call Ann Meiggs at 928-284-9100.

This fall the annual art show of the Association of Village Artists will once again benefit SPL in the Village.  In October they launched Galleria AVA with a studio in La Plaza (with the support of Snap Fitness) in the Village.  A percentage of the sales of the artists' beautiful, original work will go to our Village Library.

We are excited to announce the return of the Festival of Wreaths to SPL.  Here are the key dates to remember:

• Friday, Nov. 12 - Deliver your wreath to SPL between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. In VOC drop off your wreath at Sedona Winds between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.  Each contributor will receive one complimentary admission ticket to the Preview Gala.

• Sunday, Nov. 14 - Attend the Preview Gala and Sale at the Library on White Bear Road from 5-8 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 each or two tickets for $25.  Wine, appetizers, and cake will be served.  Musical entertainment will be provided.  You may also purchase raffle tickets to win items donated by individual artists and businesses.

• Monday, Nov. 15 - Sale to the general public begins.

• Tuesday, November 30 - Winners of People's Choice Awards will be announced.  Categories include Best of Show, Best Creative Use of Materials, Best Christmas, and Best Non-Traditional.

The Festival of Wreaths is always a special event at SPL.  Even if you do not enter a wreath, you can participate by voting for the People's Choice Awards and purchasing a wreath. Please keep in mind that donated wreaths are sold to raise funds to support your Sedona Public Library. For more information about the Festival of Wreaths, contact SanDee Kinnen at 928-203-4363.

Finally, as Manager of SPL in the Village it is my goal to carry out the Library's mission statement: The mission of the Sedona Public Library is to enrich the lives of Sedona-area residents and to help them and our community succeed by providing information services that are affordable, responsive, efficient and enjoyable, and by serving as a center for community activities.

I wish Dotte Vande Linde the best as she enjoys retirement.  I would like to thank everyone for the warm reception that I have received. Just a reminder that we are located at 56 W. Cortez Drive across from the Post Office and Fire Station #3.

We are open Tuesday through Friday from 1-5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

I look forward to seeing you at SPL in the Village.
