A Holocaust Memorial Ceremony and program will be offered to the public free of charge on Sunday, May 1, at 1 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley, at 100 Meadowlark Drive. In the lobby a sculpture by JCSVV member Skip Fox will be displayed, created in cast metal from symbolic elements evoking the Holocaust.

The ceremony. Led by Rabbi Alicia Magal of the JCSVV and Rabbi Nina Perlmutter of Heichal Baoranim in Flagstaff, will include the lighting of six candles, representing the six million Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust, along with millions of other people swept up in the horror of World War Two. Two survivors will be present: Doris Martin of Flagstaff, and Nika Fleissig of the Village of Oak Creek.

They will share their moving stories of survival and hopes for the future.

Rabbi Magal--the daughter of Nika Fleissig--will read excerpts from her new book, “From Miracle to Miracle: a Story of Survival,” which documents her mother’s dramatic escapes from death. A portion of Doris Martin’s story will be portrayed by theater students from the Coconino Community College in Flagstaff. Entitled “Never Forget,” the performance is adapted from her autobiographical book “Kiss Every Step” (with Ralph Martin), and includes original music and dance.

Both Rabbi Magal’s and Doris Martin’s books will be available at the conclusion of the program. Refreshments will be served.

The program of readings, songs, and prayers is sponsored by the Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley, Heichal Baoranim in Flagstaff, and the Martin-Springer Institute at NAU.
