This week at Jewish Community of Sedona-Verde Valley
Shalom. The Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley invites everyone to our early Erev Shabbat services, Friday evening, Dec. 9, 2011, at 5:30 p.m. led by Rabbi Alicia Magal. This is a Family/Community service which is followed by a pot luck supper.
Saturday morning, Dec. 10 at 11 a.m., all are invited to Torah study, which is divided into a two topics of discussion: first, a short discussion of the portion of the week: Vayishlach, Genesis 32:4 - 35:29 about Jacob’s return home to Canaan after twenty years. During the night prior to the meeting with his brother Esau, Jacob has a dream in which he struggles with an angel and receives a blessing of a new name: Israel. In the morning, the dramatic reunion of Esau and Jacob is fraught with emotion - will they fight? will they reconcile? What has Jacob become during the course of the past 20 years? Much to ponder. The second main focus of study will be on the Book of Joshua, as the Israelites entered into the Promised Land. We read about the battles, challenges, and attempts to establish an ethical society based on the Torah. We wrestle with how these ancient stories are relevant to our lives. Potluck dairy/vegetarian luncheon follows the study session.
