December sales tax report mostly improved
VERDE VALLEY - With the exception of Sedona, all of the communities in the Verde Valley saw an increase in their December retail sales tax revenue over 2009. Cottonwood was the only community down for the December 2010 total sales tax collections. Sedona, Camp Verde, Clarkdale and Jerome all increased their total sales tax collections for December over last year.
The Office of Economic Research and Analysis of the Arizona Department of Revenue provides the monthly sales tax report.
Cottonwood's retail sales tax increased to $589,679 in December from $588,971 for the same month last year. But in total sales tax revenue for December, the town dropped to $854,196 from $937,672 in 2009.
Cottonwood also saw a drop for December in year-to-date total sales tax from $5,271,267 in 2009 to $5,080,141 for the same period in 2010.
Rudy Rodriguez, finance director for Cottonwood, said sales tax revenues have been slowly creeping up. "Lately, we don't have double digit drops," he said.
"Even the state's new 1 percent sale tax increase hasn't slowed us too much," Rodriguez said.
He said the double-digit drops that the city was seeing for some time started changing to single-digit drops around the first of 2010. January 2010 saw an 8 percent drop, but that changed to only a 1 percent drop in February. In March, the sales tax revenue climbed by 1 percent. "November was up by nearly 12 percent," Rodriguez said.
He said he doesn't pay as much attention to single month increases as he does to an average of several months. "We try to blend it over six months," he said.
Overall, Rodriguez is encouraged. "The losses aren't as bad as they used to be," he said. "We're cautiously optimistic."
