Garage fire spares home
VERDE VILLAGE - Fire burned a home's garage on Glenbar Drive near Dr. Daniel Bright Elementary early Tuesday. Verde Valley Fire crews with help from Cottonwood and Clarkdale Fire were dispatched.
Smoke and flames were visible at a distance, so Roland Wagenbach, acting captain for Verde Valley Fire, called for more support. The single-family residence has an attached garage. The garage and two vehicles were burning. The Verde Valley Engine crew started an immediate interior search since it was not known if the residents had evacuated.
The homeowners apparently heard popping noises, which alerted them to the fire, and they safely got out. Crews began an attack through the garage where the roof had already burned through. When Cottonwood and Clarkdale units arrived, the interior attack was resumed through the unburned kitchen area to contain the fire to the exterior garage.
As knockdown of the fire was assured, the interior crews began a secondary interior search and attack, and focused on the interior smoke. Furniture and personal belongings were protected so crews could cut access holes to the attic where a fire extension was found nearest the garage. Engineer Seth Murphy, said the properly constructed firewall between the garage and the house minimized damage to the main structure.
The cause of the fire is unclear and an investigation is under way.
