School districts, College Board seats up for election in 2012
COTTONWOOD - Governing board seats in local school districts and Yavapai College will be up for re-election during the Nov. 6 general election.
In the Clarkdale-Jerome School District the two, four-year terms of board members Jane Phillips and Jill Zaske will expire.
Three of the four-year board terms at Mingus Union High School District will be up for election. Mike Mulcaire, Dr. John Tavasci Jr. and Brenda Zenan currently hold those seats.
Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District will have three of its four-year board seats up for election. The current board members whose terms expire are Randall Garrison, Mary Valenzuela and Eric Wyles.
Two of the four-year terms on the Valley Academy of Career and Technology Education also will be up for election. Those board seats are currently help by Jeff Neugebauer and Steve Gresham.
To be eligible to hold a school board seat a person must be a registered voter, a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years of age, possess their civil rights, have continually resided within the school district for at least one year immediately preceding taking office and they or their spouse cannot be employed by the district.
The recently completed re-districting by the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors also impacts the governing board seats of Yavapai College. All five Yavapai College Board seats will expire on Dec. 31, 2012, or because of the effect of redistricting become vacant as a matter of law on Jan. 1, 2013.
The six-year terms for District 1 and District 3 seats expire on Dec. 31, 2012, and those seats will be up for election on Nov. 6, 2012. Those elected to represent Districts 1 and 3 will serve six-year terms, beginning Jan.1, 2013 and expiring on Dec. 31 2018.
Yavapai County School Superintendent Tim Carter will appoint a current Yavapai College Board Members who were duly elected by the voters and whose term is being impacted through no fault or action on their part to fill the vacant terms unexpired terms of new districts.
New District 1 - this seat is up for election Nov. 6 for a six-year term. Ray Sigafoos, who currently serves on the College Board and resides within this district, has indicated he will run for election in this district.
New District 2 - Herald Harrington currently serves on the College Board and resides within this district will be appointed for a period of approximately two years until Dec. 31, 2014. The seat will be up for re-election in 2014.
New District 3 - This seat is up for election Nov. 6 for a six-year term.
Charles Leon a current College Board member will resign effective De. 31.
New District 4 - Dr. Patricia McCarver currently serves on the College Board and resides within this district. She will be appointed to the remaining unexpired term until Dec. 31, 2014.
New District 5 - Dale Fitzner, who currently serves on the College Board and resides within this district, will be appointed to the remaining unexpired term for this seat until Dec. 31, 2014.
Election materials will be available beginning April 30, or candidates may attend one of the following trainings for Prospective School Board Members.
May 2 Kirkland School District - 6 p.m. - 14200 W. Kirkland.
May 8 Prescott - 1015 Fair St. Board of Supervisors' Room - 6 p.m.
May 9 Cottonwood - Annex 10 S. Sixth St. 6 p.m. Board of Supervisors room.
Candidate information may be obtained from local school district offices or the County Schools Office at 1015 Fair St., Suite 324 in Prescott.
Nomination packets must be filed with the County School Superintendent's Office in Prescott prior to receiving petitions. The last day to file nomination petitions is Aug. 8.
