Clarkdale Sustainability receives Walton grant
Two-year grant for Verde River and Water Resources
CLARKDALE - The Town Council will approve, as part of its consent agenda during Tuesday night's council meeting, acceptance of a $420,496 grant from the Walton Family Foundation for the Clarkdale Sustainability Park.
The two-year grant is to be used to accomplish a specific list of results.
Clarkdale is the grant administrator, and two additional sub-grantees - Water Resources Research Center and Lacher Hydrological Consulting - will receive money through the grant.
In a Nov. 29 letter to Town Manager Gayle Mabery, Buddy Philpot, executive director of the Foundation, informed the town that the Walton Family Foundation has approved the grant to begin Jan. 1. The purpose of the grant is to support the Sustainable Clarkdale project.
The grant will be paid in four installments. The first payment of $137,797 will be paid upon completion of the grant agreement, and the second installment for the same amount will be made July 15.
The third and fourth installments of $72,452 each will be paid Jan. 15, 2014 and July 15, 2014.
Clarkdale's projects under the grant specific to the Verde River @ Clarkdale include the Tuzigoot River Access Point. This includes a design with engineering and projected costs within six months and traffic counts at the entrances to Tuzigoot and Tapco sites within 18 months. Arizona State Parks Board must review and approve the site concept within two years, and a plan for the project build-out must be ready within two years.
The Tapco Plant is part of the grant. An agreement between the town and landowners must be reached within one year on access to the location and allowed uses along with infrastructure. Plans and timeframes must also be agreed to.
Brewer's Tunnel Diversion Dam is another part of the grant project. A report is required within a year summarizing options for the dam. Within two years an agreement is due between the town and Freeport-McMoRan on the dam's diversion.
Regarding the Water Resource Management part of the grant, the town will manage the relationship with Lacher Hydrological Consulting to develop a local scale groundwater model based on the U.S. Geological Survey 2011 Northern Arizona groundwater model.
Clarkdale Mayor Doug Von Gausig is a paid consultant for the Walton Family Foundation on environmental and organizational issues.
The council will meet at 6 p.m. in the Men's Lounge of the Clark Memorial Clubhouse at 19 N. Ninth St.
